Your guide to English certification exams

Overview

English is the globally spoken language in the academic and work environment. Knowing and understanding the language opens up doors of opportunities in social life and boosts your confidence at the forefront of your career. Non-natives must learn the English language to gel well with the society and culture abroad.

What is an English language assessment test?

Applicants who wish to work or study abroad must submit proof of their English proficiency test as a part of their application process. The language assessment test ensures that you can write, read, and communicate with your peers, supervisors, and locals.

What are the most common English language assessment tests?

There are numerous English assessment tests accepted in various countries. The most widely accepted ones are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). There are no strict eligibility criteria to take TOEFL and IELTS tests. If you have passed high school or a 10+2 level of education, you can appear for the English proficiency test with some training.

TOEFL: How does it work?

● Most American Universities accept the TOEFL exam scores as a part of their admission process for foreign applicants.
● The TOEFL test evaluates your language skills across four categories — reading comprehension, listening comprehension, speaking, and written expression. The test lasts for four hours.
● The TOEFL test used to be conducted as either a Paper-Based Test (PBT) or Internet-Based Test (IBT). However, as of April 2021, the PBT has been discontinued.
● Each section is worth 30 points, and the candidate has to score at least between 90 to 120 overall to be qualified for TOEFL.
● The scores are valid for two years.
Prime Education Center (PEC) provides TOEFL exam training throughout the UAE. You will be coached by experts who will help you prepare for the TOEFL exam.

IELTS: How does it work?

● More than 10,000 universities and companies accept the IELTS score across hundreds of countries globally.
● There are two types of IELTS tests available — an academic version and a general training version. Both test versions are evaluated across four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
● The test lasts for three hours and is different from TOEFL. It consists of in-person speaking with the evaluator and diverse question formats such as diagrams, MCQs, short answers, etc.
● The score is given on a scale from 1 to 9. Most universities and employers require a minimum score of 6 to 7 in the IELTS test.
● The scores are valid for two years.
Prime Education Center (PEC) has professional coaches for IELTS exam training throughout the UAE.

Which test should you opt for, TOEFL or IELTS?

Both, TOEFL and IELTS are basic English proficiency tests. IELTS is considered easier and shorter than TOEFL. However, you can confirm with the respective university or company for their test preferences.
